Decolonization began in the 1950s, and many people in Rwanda began to revolt. This was known as the Hutu political movement.
This social revolution continued from 1959 to 1961. By 1962, the people
of Rwanda had gained their independence from Belgium. Soon after, "Hutu
Power," an ideology propounded by the Hutu extremists in Rwanda, contributed to the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 against the Tutsi and moderate Hutu.
