How Rwanda got colonized

In 1897 Germany began to colonize Rwanda. Although this must have been scary and odd for the people of Rwanda, Germany's initial presence was not met with much defiance. During World War 1, Germany lost the power of this country, which was then in control by Belgium.

How Rwanda got their independence

Decolonization began in the 1950s, and many people in Rwanda began to revolt. This was known as the Hutu political movement. This social revolution continued from 1959 to 1961. By 1962, the people of Rwanda had gained their independence from Belgium. Soon after, "Hutu Power," an ideology propounded by the Hutu extremists in Rwanda, contributed to the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 against the Tutsi and moderate Hutu.

Modern Rwanda

Modern day Rwanda consists of three different ethnic groups. They are 84% Hutu, 15% Tutsi, and 1% Twa. The most common languages spoken by these groups are Kinyarwanda, English, and French.Their president is named Paul Kagame. Compared to neighboring countries, Rwanda has low corruption, but human rights organizations allege suppression of opposition groups, intimidation, and restrictions on freedom of speech. Rwanda has the world's highest proportion of females in government positions in proportion to the population.
